Refresh or rebuild? Moving an older site onto a lean foundation

Sooner or later every website reaches a point where adding another plugin will not fix it. Pages are slow, updates are scary, the theme is no longer supported and nobody remembers how half of it works. The question becomes: refresh it, or rebuild it?

Signs it is time to rebuild

  • Your theme or page builder is no longer updated, or updating it breaks pages.
  • You need a developer for every small text change.
  • The site is slow on a phone, or fails basic accessibility checks.
  • You have more plugins than pages.
  • AI search and Google rarely mention you, even for your own services.

How we rebuild without the drama

We moved this site from a commercial theme and page builder onto our own lean theme while it stayed online. The process is the same for clients:

  • Back up everything first. Files and database, stored safely before a single change.
  • Inventory what matters. Pages, forms, links and anything that depends on a plugin, so nothing quietly disappears.
  • Build alongside, then switch. The new theme and features are installed and checked before visitors ever see them, and switching back is one command if needed.
  • Move content to standard blocks. Content trapped in builder shortcodes or proprietary blocks is rebuilt with WordPress’s own blocks so it survives future changes.
  • Clean up. Demo pages, unused plugins and old themes are removed, with backups kept in case anything is needed later.
  • Verify. Every page is checked on desktop and phone, and forms and sign in are tested end to end.

Keep what works

A rebuild is not a reason to throw away good content or search history. We keep your strongest pages and addresses, redirect the ones that change and use the rebuild to make everything clearer for both people and answer engines.

Talk to us about your current site. Sometimes a refresh is enough, and we will tell you if it is.
